Many former players, coaches and current ESPN broadcasters are making their predictions for the Super Bowl. Here, I go over a few of them.

I thought that MAYBE Jim Harbaugh would loosen up with former players asking him questions in the media. Nope, not gonna happen...even if you are in the Hall of Fame.

How the Pro Bowl May Be Different This Time

Who wants to watch another non-effort, non-hitting Pro Bowl this year? Uh...no one! I think this year will be different, thanks in part to Roger Goddell's threats and Peyton Manning's instruction. For more, listen below.

Kaepernick. I’m a believer now.

As a lifelong 49ers fan, I eat and breathe this team. Alex Smith after the playoff run last year was everybody’s guy including mine. Everybody fell over themselves after that Bears win when Kaepernick took over for Smith, as did I. However, I wasn’t completely onboard with a permanent QB change-until now.
Before, I appreciated the tools Kaepernick displayed. He showed off the running/scrambling ability, the arm, and the gun down the field. He threaded the needle on passes, and he had enough zip on the ball to take that chance where Smith hadn’t. BUT, he still has his problems changing the plays at the line of scrimmage, the brutal lateral, the mishandling under center. Is this guy PLAYOFF ready? That was the main concern. Could he win the big game, despite all of the elements? Last night, he did. Cold, rain, Brady, Patriots heavily favored with them coming back to miraculously tie, he did it. Despite the growing pains, he’s not going to lose the game for you, and he, as many have said, he never gets rattled. We watched Brady spike the ball when a timeout was given to the 49ers defense. Kaepernick is cool under any setting, no matter the circumstance. That’s what I needed to see last night to make sure that this guy can go all the way.

Tim Tebow to the Jets-A Good Move?

I just can't see this Tim Tebow move being a good one for the New York Jets. Unless, it puts Mark Sanchez into a better zone and he feels the heat of competition now. If Sanchez benefits by developing his game because he has a popular #2 waiting, then it could help. What happens though when Sanchez throws a couple of pics in a game in New York? The fans got Tebow to play in Denver. You don't think that would happen in New York?

I'd love to see them bench Sanchez, start Tebow, and Tim be unreal. That would be a great storyline for us NFL fans.

49ers Nearing A Deal With Ahmad Brooks

Sometimes when teams say they are trying to keep the band together, that's what they say publically andf then everyone leaves.

The 49ers seem to mean business, even though they have only signed two players so far. First C.J. Spillman and now Ahmad Brooks

Brooks was one of the key players on defense last year, racking up 7 sacks and 50 tackles. It looks like he will get a 5 year/$35 million deal. It will be interesting to see if the team franchises Carlos Rogers, and keeps Donte Whitner

Lin vs. Lebron is Must See TV Tonight

You know what would be the best thing to happen for the NBA since Jeremy Lin's debut? Jeremy Lin beating the Miami Heat at the buzzer tonight in Miami. The Heat play him close all night. He limits his turnovers. Carmelo Anthony doesn't disrupt the flow, and the Knicks, with a victory add to the subplots in the NBA, and become Eastern conference contenders. Then the Lakers trade for Deron Williams after the game. One can dream right. In the video above, Bruce Bowen talks about the matchup.

Ramon Ortiz Gets Giants Invite For Spring Training

The San Francisco Giants tweeted that they have invited pitcher Ramon Ortiz to Spring Training this year. He hasn't done a whole heck of a lot in his career. His best year came when the Giants faced him when he was with the Angels in the 2002 World Series, when he went 15-9. The good news is that he isn't afraid to throw a pitch in any count, and he can still throw some heat. The bad-he can't throw to left handed pitching and he gives up too may home runs. Maybe like a Javier Lopez specialty bullpen guy going after right handers only?

Jeremy Lin Lives On His Brothers Couch In New York

Jeremy Lin, who has been one of the more fun stories of the last couple of weeks, doesn't actually have a place to live in New York. The Knicks guard, who has averaged 26.5 points, 7.5 assists and two steals the last couple of games is staying with his brother where he "has his own couch" for several months! I'm sure many fantasy owners and New Yorkers agree that he should stay there, don't break what doesn't need fixing, and if there's a dumpster available, maybe he should sleep in that. Maybe he could go for 40 a game...which makes me wonder, what if LeBron James were staying on a couch?

Alright, I guess Lin may be finding a place soon. He didn't have a guaranteed contract with the Knicks, which may explain why he's been unreal. It's good to see the former Golden State Warrior fan favorite doing well. Now, Lin's deal is in place for $800,000. Maybe that will get him two couches in New York.

Kevin Durant Not Impressed With Blake Griffin's Dunk

Ok, come on. Somebody wake up Kevin Durant, pour a bucket of water down on him ala Flashdance, and tell him Blake Griffin's dunk WAS awesome. he's in sheer denial, because it was against his team, the almighty Oklahoma City Thunder. He says, "I have no appreciation for it at all. It was a layup, I think. He threw the ball in and got fouled and made his free throw, so it was three points at the end of the day." Really? Even LeBron James after making dunk of the year the night before was man enough about Blake earning the title on Twitter.

Some might say Durant is a great teammate. I think he's getting more and more cranky the longer he's in the NBA. Have some fun why don't you?

Kyle Williams Dad Says Kyle Had An Injured Shoulder

Does it wreak of spin when Kyle Williams father, Kenny comes out to the press to tell them Kyle had an injured shoulder? Even if that were true, using it as an excuse for the two fumbles really seems like no one wants to take responsibility, or at least the Dad doesn't.

At this point in the season, everybody is playing hurt, besides what does a hurt shoulder have to do with a ball bouncing off your knee? Or, diving for a ball you barely held on to? Or, not protecting the ball, waiving it from side to side on the last run back. I think, even Kyle himself wouldn't blame it on the injury. A father protecting his kid I guess.

UPDATE: Kyle Williams Dad had this quote, despite blaming it on his shoulder. "That information he has not said anything about publicly and will not because he felt strongly that he could get the job done. There are no excuses; we don't do that. I don't want that misconstrued."

Terrell Owens to the 49ers? Bad Idea

T.O. tweets to former Buffalo teammate Donte Whitner that he wants to "take 'em deep" in a 49ers uniform. Whitner replies "I'm ready to vouch for you and let them know how great of a teammate you were in Buffalo." I want to know what Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks of T.O. Would he vouch for him?
The 49ers can't and won't do this and for good reason. The list is long, but let's point out a couple of the most obvious things. Alex Smith despite his lack of an arm and consistent passing ability, plus injuries is a Pro Bowl calaber quarterback. Jim Harbaugh has been building him up every week. All it takes is one of T.O.'s meltdowns to have all of that destroyed. All you need is bad locker room chemistry taking over, with all of the focus from the press on that issue, during a playoff run.

Let's also not forget that no general manager in football showed up for T.O.'s scrimmage a few months back. An aging veteran with knee issues is certainly not something to experiment with at this juncture either. I would take a guy who's hungry that knows the playbook and has worked with Alex Smith before in a guy like Joe Hastings any day of the week, over Owens.

Frank Gore Not 100%...Now What?

Jim Harbaugh when pressed at his press conference today, admitted 49ers running back Frank Gore is not 100%. That's after saying a couple of questions prior that he had no idea why Gore ran the ball only 10 times against Arizona.

So if Gore is still having problems with his ankle and knee, how come he looks so good and Braylon Edwards doesn't? I know the 49ers are trying to add something to think about in the film room and adding Alex Smith's arm to the mix, plus with Gore's problems you almost have to. Too bad that's not working. The 49ers are going to have to go to the shotgun more, and add in more three step drop passes to the mix in the coming weeks.

Giants Rumors at Winter Meetings

There are a lot of rumors being tossed around at baseball’s winter meetings and the San Francisco Giants in particular. The most hilarious thing I’ve heard yet from our very own Buster Olney- “NL official says Cody Ross is looking for a 3-year deal.” That’s hysterical…unless they don’t have to pay him for those three months he takes off. Oh, and 3 million a year. Don’t get me started on the Ryan Ludwick rumors. One of the more interesting rumors though involves Japanese player Hiroyuki Nakajima. Now, depending on who you talk to, the Giants either have or have not put in a bid for his services. BUT look at the numbers. At 29, Nakajima could fill your hole at SS…and hey, anything under a 38 year old five years past their prime is good for me. Last season, Nakajima had a .297 average with 16 home runs, 100 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He also has a resume which includes the 2008 Olympics and 2009 World Baseball Classic. He also has two gold gloves at SS. I know the ladies like Stamos, but if you’ve got somebody that can hit and field, let’s go there for awhile.

Raiders Update-Injuries/Soldout Broncos and More

Alright Raider fans...here's your latest update for Sunday for the Denver Broncos game. First of all,  you have to wonder about the health of Darren McFadden. He could be ready to go, but I think they're going to preserve him for next Thursday's game against the San Diego Chargers. Why not? You have Michael Bush ready to go. Kevin Boss and Marcel Reece look like they're good to go on Sunday but Will Sebastian Janikowski or Rolando McClain be available? It also looks like Sunday's game is pretty close to selling out. That would be four home games in a row, which hasn't happened since 2008. It will be interesting to see how much Carson Palmer has improved over the bye and what T.J. Houshmandzadeh looks like too.

Troy Polamalu Fined For Calling His Wife

Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been fined by the NFL for $10,000. Why is he fined that much? It's not for a punishing hit on a receiver coming over the middle. It's because he called this wifey during a game. I guess the grocery list just can't wait right? OK...that wasn't the reason. Warriors Charity Game Is a Great Idea For NBA Teams

If you haven't heard I think this Matt Barnes charity game he's trying to put on is genius. He's setting up a matchup between the 2007 "We Believe" team and the current Warriors roster. Talk about fun to watch. Why can't the Kings do this with the "White Chocolates" against the current players? If this NBA strike is going to cause ill will between the fans and the owners and players, these charity games may soften the blow. I know a few players have done pickup games. Who Do the Raiders Turn To For A GM?

Al Davis hinted over the last few years that he might look at a General Manager for the Oakland Raiders. For some reason, it didn't materialize. Many names are coming out as rumored possibilities including Bill Parcells, John Madden, Jon Gruden and Tom Flores. Could it be a less sexier name that no one is considering? The two John's (Jon's) in this scenario are obviously the most intriguing on paper, especially with their past history. Then again, would a 75 year old John Madden be a good choice? Does he want to deal with this day's players and agents? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Ted Ginn is a trooper. He decided that he would cut his pay from $2.2 to $1 million to stay with the 49ers. Part of that logic was nobody knew he would even be a factor as a wideout until recently. You can't pay a return guy a boatload of money, unless they play in Chicago and are named Devin Hester (4-years 40 million...yes, Devin is also a receiver now though). Next Up For the Giants-The Barry Zito Question

If you ask anybody in management for the Giants about the future of Barry Zito, they all say the same thing. Something to the effect of "I have no idea." In the case of Bruce "Slingblade" Bochy insert a grumble at the beginning of that quote and a "mmmm hmmm" at the end. Basically, Zito is owed a truckload of money and simply letting him go would be extremely expensive. $19 million next season, $20 million in 2013, and a $7 million buyout in 2014. That's $46 million to make him go away. However, if he's not going to be healthy, or when he is he's non productive, it's something that the Giants have to consider.

Giants Make Major Moves Today-Rowand/Tejada Sent Packing

Well, you could argue that the Giants should have had the guts to do this weeks ago, but they finally made a major statement. You can't keep trotting out excuses, you need to make a bold move(s) and they certainly did that. Miguel Tejada is gone and so is Aaron Rowand. Two guys who are overpaid underachievers. Upset about playing time, and their roles, perhaps they needed to be axed first. It gives a guy like Brett Pill with solid power numbers a chance to shine. Should Frank Gore Be a '49er For Life'

I give credit to Jim Harbaugh. He's playing the press perfectly in this Frank Gore contract talk. Singletary would've said "Frank Gore's contact? I have to go look at the film." Harbaugh says it's "water cooler talk" and he doesn't see any ill will from Gore in camp. Perfect. So is it smart for the 49ers to give Gore a lifetime contact as Trent Baalke says? Is a running back who's 29 that hasn't played a full season in six years worth DeAngelo Williams money? (five years, $43 million, $21 million guaranteed). I'm thinking "no" unless it's half loaded in incentives, like his current contract. Maybe 2-3 years would be reasonable with a nice signing bonus?

Jed York: "18-game season would curb fan violence"

Yes, that was Jed York this morning trying to dig himself out of the fan violence at the 49ers/Raiders game Saturday night. He did say the right things about hiring more security, but there's one thing he said has been getting some play. He thinks that expanding the NFL Season to 18 games would actually decrease violence. How do you add games and actually not have more of anything? His logic-The season ticket holders aren't in attendance at preseason games, and if you lower that schedule to two, and give those to the regular season, you would have a more stable group of people in the stands. Basically, he's saying people that have shelled out a fortune aren't going to ruin it for themselves, and be out all of that cash because they punched someone in the face. Do you honestly think that suddenly it's going to be a peaceful mecca at Candlestick because there's season ticket holders around? Unless it's all season ticket holders in attendance-which isn't the case, there's no way you can convince anyone with a brain that a Raiders/49ers matchup at any point in the season or out, wouldn't result in some kind of violence. However, it would just be at a more controlled degree. You wouldn't have the guy that's getting beaten in the bathroom being ignored because all units were out of the stadium dealing with the violence in the parking lot. As overreactions come pouring in to Jed's simple quote of greed, if you really dig down deeper into the story it makes a lot more sense. It looks like one move is already being made-no more 49ers/Raiders preseason match-ups. pic by applez

Hideki Matsui Clears Waivers For the A's

If you're the Oakland A's do you try to rid yourself of one of the hottest players in baseball? If he's 37 and a free agent after the year, and your team is going nowhere, then the answer is yes. Hideki Matsui has cleared waivers, so it looks like the A's may look for a trade. Will anybody be buying?

Oakland A's Hire Former Player/Manager Phil Garner as Special Advisor

Phil Garner, who started his baseball career as a player for the Oakland A's, has now been hired as a special assistant. He will be in uniform tonight and be a part of the team for several games this season. He also managed for 16 years, and many on twitter have wondered whether this is a backup plan for Bob Melvin. Kind of like how the Raiders hired Hue Jackson behind Tom Cable. Stay tuned.

Angel Villalona, Former Giants Prospect Is Suing For $5 Million

One time hot San Francisco Giants prospect Angel Villalona is now suing the Giants to the tune of $5 million. You might remember the reason the Giants parted ways with the prospect-he was charged with murder in 2009. Villalona ended up being cleared, and he wants damages plus a chance to play in the organization again. That's not going to happen on a lot of levels, namely suing the company you want to employ you. Plus the "lack of evidence" thing is a little scary.

Jerry Rice Will Be an ESPN Analyst

Jerry Rice will join the ESPN staff, which will be a welcome addition on September 15th. His candor is sharp and he will go after athletes I think. Some guys, especially coaches looking for a future gig won't do that. We don't have to worry about that with Rice. Look for him to participate on NFL Live, SportsCenter and ESPN's Audibles show. We hear he will team up with his former touchdown connection Steve Young in some fashion, which should be fun for 49ers fans.

MLB Hands Down Brawl Suspensions For Giants-Phillies Brawl

Who would have thought that the San Francisco Giants would have walked away unscathed in the punishments for the Phillies/Giants brawl? Not I, that's for sure. Quite frankly Shane Victorino probably got off at just three games. He instigated the fight, shoved an umpire and beat up a coach. That's three games? If he shot someone, would that be three and a half? From the San Francisco Giants side, they also got off. Having Giants pitcher Ramon Ramirez and Eli Whiteside get fined only, you could argue was an escape. How about all of those replays of Pablo Sandoval throwing and landing a punch and not getting anything? Is that World Series champions respect? Is that Joe Torre's influence in the league office? Either way, Giants fans will take it.

Dashon Goldson Re-Signs With the 49ers

Who thought this was going to happen? After tweeting several times about his demise, Dashon Goldson is now a 49er again. So, what made this happen? Well number one, the injury to Reggie Smith could have made it more urgent. I think it's safe to say that the 49ers secondary is in pretty solid shape with Goldson, Donte Whitner and Carlos Rogers. The 49ers come out ahead in this deal, however. Instead of signing Goldson to a long term 5 year deal that Goldson rejected, the 49ers get him at a steal. 1 year, 2 million dollars.

49ers Are Trying To Trade Taylor Mays

One bone of contention between Mike Singletary and 49ers GM Trent Baalke last year was drafting Taylor Mays. This was a Singletary pick all the way. Baalke was said to not want him. You have to wonder, if Pete Carroll, who coached Mays in college passed, why didn't the 49ers? So, do the 49ers have a buyer where Singletary is now coaching in Minnesota? What would you get for an underachieving rookie? We shall see how this one plays out.

49ers sign former Saints center Jonathan Goodwin

Things are starting to take shape for the San Francisco 49ers. Just a couple of days ago, it was full on panic mode. Now, with solid signings of Carlos Rogers and former Saints center Jonathan Goodwin, people are starting to believe there may be a plan here after all. Also, rumors of Braylon Edwards and others is exciting the fan base. The deal for Goodwin is for 3 years with a max of $11 million.

Freddy Sanchez Expected To Go Under the Knife

San Francisco Giants 2nd baseman Freddy Sanchez, who has been trying to rehab at his home in Arizona, is expected to go under the knife soon. GM Brian Sabean didn't mince his words saying that Sanchez is “behind the eight-ball with each passing day.” You could probably bet with Jeff Keppinger and Orlando Cabrera added, the Giants would rather have Freddy get ready for next season.

49ers Sign Safety Madieu Williams

The non moves continue for the 49ers who picked up former Minnesota Vikings safety Madieu Williams today. All I can tell you is the Vikings were sick of him after two miserable seasons. Basically, he likes to give up the long ball for a touchdown. In other words, he's a cheap Nate Clements. I guess it's an easier pill to swallow if he's only making a few million a year? Good run defense though. Yikes.

49ers Likely Out of the Nnamdi Asomugha Sweepstakes

So 49ers fans, how are you feeling? Michael Crabtree out with serious foot issues, Frank Gore's a holdout, there's virtually no secondary, David Baas is gone, etc. Your big splash is that you've signed a much injured kicker, and now it looks like you can waive goodbye to Nnamdi Asomugha. The Jets and Dallas are said to be the major players left. Read more

Who's Going to Start for the Giants Sunday? It Might Be Eric Surkamp

The plot thickens for the San Francisco Giants. Who will be there starter on Sunday? We know it won't be Jonathan Sanchez who was in and out the whole game in Fresno according to pitching coach Dave Righetti. Barry Zito is likely not to start thanks to him giving up 14 runs in two outings. Could the Giants ask left hander Eric Surkamp to come up? Read more

Carlos Beltran Deal Is Close To Done For the San Francisco Giants

The question all along has been, what would the San Francisco Giants be willing to part with to get Carlos Beltran. It looks like highly touted pitching prospect Zach Wheeler is one of those people, alongside center fielder Gary Brown. How much the Mets are willing to cover in Beltran's contract is also an issue. Obviously, how this plays out for Andres Torres, Cody Ross, Nate Schierholtz remains to be seen too. Beltran started his career in center, but has now been playing right field.

A Summary of 49ers President Jed York's Conference Call

Jed York sat down for a conference call earlier today with reporters, and everything is covered. From sharing a stadium with the Raiders-which seems like it's a possibility-to free agents. It does look like the 49ers will be signing people, the question is who? York seems to think retaining 49er players is the key, rather than spending a boat load of money on other talent. Read the highlights here.
